The Crazy Bones String Band was an accident waiting to happen at the Foothills Bluegrass Music Society in Calgary in the early 2000s.

Way back in the 1990s, Karin Goetz innocently bought Scott Glass a 5-string banjo as a gag birthday gift, but he didn't get the joke and he actually learned how to play the dang thing. In sheer self-defense, Karin picked up the mandolin. When Mike Greffen saw them playing together it looked like so much fun that he told them he could play the fiddle and signed on (and then tried to learn the fiddle). Bass player Dale Ulan's previous experience playing bass in a Ukrainian polka band made him an obvious choice to fill out the roster and these four combine to make a unique, grassy sound.

.

The band started playing for their own amusement, but soon friends and family wanted a good laugh as well. Their first public gig was born!! Since that humbling day the Crazy Bones String Band has played birthday, eviction and summer solstice parties, coffee houses and even the Spruce Meadows National. They don't appear regularly because they are not regular, but check out the Schedule section for upcoming gigs.

What The Critics Say

"They make bluegrass inspired noise, effortlessly blending 2.5 part harmonies with one of a kind instrumentals (which is what happens when you can't play the same thing twice). They handle well in the corners and have lots of leg room, they are full bodied with a fruity aftertaste."

"Crazy Bones ... is not a real disease!"

University of Calgary Medical School

"The Crazy Bones String Band started the show [the Shady Grove Bluegrass Festival] with a set of solid tunes delivered with smiles and enthusiasm. Bassist Dale Ulan proved himself a trouper on their final number as his bass self-destructed not once or twice but three times before he set her down. A band I will consider for an opening slot in the future."

"For a bunch of untalented hicks, these guys put on a heck of show."
